Film Screening: Finding Hygge
September 20, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
We are so excited to bring to Alexandria a special screening of this impactful film, “Finding Hygge: A documentary exploring Denmark’s secret to happiness.”
Hygge has exploded in popularity amidst growing division and distrust around the world, but the Danish
word and its definition are more complicated than it seems. For those who seek happiness, this exploratory
documentary travels around the globe to discover the true meaning of hygge and how to find it.
From the event planner: “I have hesitated to mention my recent exploration of “hygge” because of how trendy it is right now and because we—Americans—have once again taken a complex and meaningful practice and turned it into commercial lists of things to buy and do. If you are unfamiliar with the concept of Hygge, this is Joseph Owen’s definition: “Hygge: the Danish word and concept that is hard to translate … the art of building sanctuary and community, of paying attention to what makes us feel alive. A feeling of belonging to the moment and celebrating the everyday. It’s in the small rituals that comfort us, make us feel at home.” I lost my way in 2017 and I spent this past winter climbing out of a very dark place. In doing so, I practiced Hygge. I turned my home into my sanctuary and filled it with only those who honored it. I practiced rituals—lighting candles, following a skincare regimen, listening to music, taking long baths, making my bed. I invested in creating for its own sake, never in pursuit of productivity. I relished in the everyday—meals, the sunrise, waking up without an alarm, long walks, puppy snuggles. Hygge pulled me out of that dark space. Sanctuary. Community. And always looking for and connecting with what makes me feel alive. This is my spiritual practice now.”
We are grateful to ALX Community for helping us host this event.
